01 / THE TENSION

BEAR SAFETY IS MORE THAN CARRYING SPRAY

READ THE SITUATION BEFORE YOU CHOOSE YOUR RESPONSE.

Most outdoor users know they should carry bear spray. The harder part is knowing what is actually happening when a bear appears. Context matters: the bear’s behaviour, the environment, distance, surprise and how the encounter is changing all affect what comes next.

This session is about building better judgement before fear or guesswork takes over.

02 / THE SESSION

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

A practical introduction to behaviour-first thinking.

A practical introduction to the same behaviour-first thinking Jason uses in Bear Savvy Canada’s broader training.

01

Know Before You Go

Recognize bear habitat, signs and common risk factors before an encounter happens.

02

Avoid the Surprise

Learn trail habits and awareness practices that can reduce the chance of a surprise close-range encounter.

03

Read the Encounter

Understand why behaviour, environment and context matter before deciding what to do next.

04 / LIVE Q&A

Bring the bear-safety questions you’ve never had a chance to ask.

SESSION LEADER

Jason Shute

Bear Savvy Canada

Jason teaches bear safety through a behaviour-based, ecological approach. His teaching draws on bear research, fieldwork and extensive personal bear encounter experience to help people recognize risk, avoid unnecessary encounters and make better decisions when an encounter happens.

For this WindQuester community session, Jason will focus on practical bear awareness, avoidance and encounter-response thinking for hikers, campers and backpackers.

PREVIOUS COLLABORATION

FROM THE FIELD TO THE LIVE SESSION

Our collaboration with Jason didn’t start with this event. In an earlier WindQuester documentary project, we followed Jason in the field and explored the relationship between outdoor travel, bear country and the wild places we share.

BEHAVIOUR BEFORE GUESSWORK

UNDERSTAND MORE. RESPOND BETTER.

Bear Savvy Canada’s training focuses on understanding bear behaviour, reading the environment, preventing avoidable encounters and responding to the situation in front of you — rather than treating every encounter as the same problem.
